JibberJobber Development â" A Little Bit Of History This post might seem a little off-topic, but Ive had a lot of people ask me about doing their own JibberJobber-like thing online. I figured this helps put the project into perspective, since Im talking about some of the resources it takes to get up and keep it running Also, it seems like a good time to share some nostalgia, since were celebrating our three year anniversary! Now is a great time to upgrade, cuz there are lots of goodies getting shipped to those who upgrade for a year! In March of 2006 I had the idea for this revolutionary job search organizer, which would soon be called JibberJobber.com. I had already thought of two other online businesses and was putting together business plans and operational plans to move forward on them. I was looking for programming resources to help move these projects forward. Even though I have a background in web development, I knew my time was better spent doing other stuff. I looked for offshore outsourcing shops (thats the budget I had) and was really disappointed with what I found. The communication I got from those shops were overly sophisticated, not what i wanted nor what I was used to. I figured they were accustomed to working with huge companies, like GE and Ford and Microsoft I needed something different. One morning, a programmer who used to work at my old company (the one I got laid off from) popped online. He left our old company about a year before I did, and we hadnt communicated for a LONG time. He had a stellar record at our old company and I had come to know him as a very talented developer. I asked him what he was up to, and he responded, Im going to (a city a few hours away) for an interview. I responded, why dont you just work for me? You can work out of your home, work your own hours, etc. During the conversation I told him that this would be a six month project. Little did we realize what we were about to start hes been with me for over three years! From March 2006 May 2006 he worked on taking my 20 design screenshots and implementing them. I knew getting the site up in two months was pushing it, but we did it. Early on I did some html programming, but one day he said Jason, you are indenting two spaces, and you need to indent only one space. It was then that I realized (a) he was more obsessive about code than I was (and I was more obsessive than others), and (b) he was absolutely the person I wanted on this project he cared about stuff that no one would see, but that would have an impact on other parts of the company, and (c) by helping with the programming I was probably slowing things down that is the last time I helped in that area (which was a really good thing). Around May, 2006 I got a message from the quality assurance (QA) expert from our old company she said that since I left, the company went in a different direction and she was very unhappy and that she was leaving. She wasnt asking for a job, just letting me know (as friends) that she was moving on. I didnt know how to pay her but I really, really wanted her to come work for us I really hated doing QA, and once again, I knew I needed to spend my time on other things. I figured out how to increase the funding I got and brought her on to do QA shes been a lifesaver many times. So what have these two done since May 15, 2006? JibberJobber was not done in May 15, 2006, it was just good enough to go live since then weve grown a wish list that is pages long, and it seems as soon as we get one thing off the list we add three more. Most of our wish list items come from our own use and from our users we love user input! As an employer, Im proud to say that my original team is still with me, three years later. And I hope they are with me for many years to come we have a chemistry that just works, and Ive felt extremely blessed that Ive come across them. How to respond to a job offer- when to negotiate Itâs an exciting moment when the job offer comes through, particularly if itâs the job you most wanted, but what if the terms arenât quite what youâd expected or hoped for? When is it ok to negotiate? Youâll want to feel happy with every aspect of your new job, but youâre bound to be worried that your prospective employers wonât be too pleased if you try to bargain. Who holds the power? Youâll need to weight things up carefully. The key to successful negotiations is an understanding of who is most keen to compromise. So, who holds the balance of power? How important is it to you to get something changed and how important is it to the employer to get you on the team? What if the offer is for a big graduate scheme? If youâve applied to a big graduate scheme with lots of vacancies to fill and large numbers of applications then your scope for negotiation is going be limited. The salary and terms will be fixed but that doesnât mean that you canât negotiate at all. The company has probably already spent quite a bit of money on the assessment process and has chosen you. At this point their preference will be for you to accept the offer, but if you donât it wonât be too difficult for them to find someone else. They might be prepared to compromise on small issues. Youâre going to be discussing any possible changes with the Human Resources department. Your future line manager will probably never know about the conversations youve had so there is no embarrassment about asking for some changes. Be realistic- what might get changed? So what might get changed? You could for example propose a different start date from what was envisaged. What if you want a more major concession? Decide in advance whether a lack of agreement from them is a âdeal breakerâ for you. If it is then the power is firmly in your hands. Itâs quite possible that no salary or terms were advertised, and it may be that the job has been created especially for you following an internship. It you want to negotiate, youâre probably not going to be talking to the Human Resources Department, but perhaps directly with your future line manager. This is going to feel more personal and might need to be handled with considerable tact. A good employer shouldnât object to negotiations provided that you remain utterly professional. If you sense that a polite and reasonable request from you has gone down really badly, you might want to rethink whether this relationship is going to work out. What if the offer is for a fixed term position? Some SMEs will offer you a fixed term contract for a specified period of time. This might not be what you want but could be worth accepting and it may offer you a foot on the ladder to a permanent job. Youre probably going to feel anxious as the end of the contract nears and it could be worth asking the employer to give you an end of contract bonus, payable when the contract expires. You can sell this on the basis that it will encourage you not to look for other jobs until after the end of the fixed term, it gives the employer the comfort of knowing that you will stick around and you know that if you do need to find another job you will have a cushion of some money to support you while you look. Think about all the terms As you ponder any job offer keep thinking about the basic considerations. Who has the strongest position? Youâll need to be realistic. A small company may not be able to afford the sort of salary you were hoping for but equally youâll need to be confident that youâre going to be earning enough to pay the bills. You might also want to think about the training youâre going to get. Thereâs unlikely to be a set process (as with the big graduate schemes). Youâll want to know that doing this job is going to add to your employability skills; do you need to ask for a commitment to some specific training? What about holidays, pension and sick pay? Do make sure that you are clear of the whole scope of the package before you make a final decision. Remember that your careers support doesnât end when you get the job offer!
